[Q] sample size for paired sample t-test

Hi everyone,

I’m having trouble with estimating the sample size for a paired sample t test.

I am analyzing the effect of a program using a pre and post test for a subset of a larger data set. I want to know if the subset is large enough to reliably detect any differences pre and post test.

The pre test mean for the larger data set is 3.6523 (Sd .50116), post test mean is 4.5280 (sd .43177)

Paired sample correlation : .540

I am getting large effect sizes because the mean difference is over 1 standard deviation, and that’s giving me very small (under 10) estimated sample size.

Am I doing something wrong? I’ve tried all the recommended online calculators and still run into the same issue.
