What is the rest of the world’s opinions on manual transmissions?

I live in Ireland, where most cars are manual (9/10 by one estimate) and you’d struggle to find anyone unable to drive manual, and many papers seem to talk about automatics “making driving easier” as if they were a luxury.

I know in the US it’s almost the opposite where everyone drives automatics and manuals are the ‘performance’ option.

So, my question is, does the rest of the world have such polarised options for transmissions, or is it more 50/50?
