Hey r/statistics 🙂 Hope you guys can shed some light on something which has been bothering me.
I have a set of data (bacteria counts) which is heavily skewed towards the lower numbers, with a few really high numbers.
My supervisor (not in the field of statistics) wants to use mean/STD, but I think it would be better to use median/IQR, as it shows the skewed distribution of my data better. My understanding is that mean/STD is better to be used in normally distributed samples, and is not that meaningful for the skewed data that I have, am I wrong?
I can attach the data set or box plot I made if it’s any help.
