I’m trying to determine whether a “hot head” or “streakiness” exists in a game I play, but I’m not sure if my math is sound.

So I play a trivia game where tournaments consists of about 8 games, often round-robin, and each game consists of twenty questions with points given to whichever of the two teams playing gets the answer first.

Now, many players (including myself) have observed a “tilting” effect where people play much worse for brief streaks, but I want to see whether this is a real effect.

My first thought was to take a team and see if the number of points they get in a game provides useful information to predict how many points they’ll get in the next game. I could do this by finding their average points per game overall and then . . . something. I’m not really sure what to do, or if this will even return an accurate result.
